Our Story

About Liberant

Where faith and artistry converge to bring freedom, healing, and creative wholeness.

Why We Exist

The Story Behind Liberant

Liberant Ministries was born from a deep conviction: Christian artists and creative entrepreneurs need a dedicated space for discipleship. One that honors both their spiritual journey and their creative calling.

Too often, creatives feel caught between two worlds. In the church, their artistry is undervalued or misunderstood. In the creative industry, their faith has no place. Liberant exists at that intersection, creating a community where you don't have to choose between your faith and your craft.

We believe that God is the ultimate Creator, and that He designed every artist, maker, and creative entrepreneur to reflect His image. When we heal from the wounds that block our creativity, discover our true identity, and learn to co-create with God, something extraordinary happens: we become free to create as we were always meant to.

For Melissa Gibson Smith, Liberant's founder, this is not a theory. It is a testimony.

Melissa grew up in a family that understood creativity as spiritual. Art was not a hobby or a career aspiration in her home. It was understood as calling, as an expression of the image of God. That foundation was a gift. But like many artists, she did not escape unscathed. Deep trauma shaped her early years, and with it came the effects that trauma so often leaves on creative people: perfectionism, performance-driven striving, and a profound struggle to be seen and to let her own creative voice be heard. Knowing that creativity was sacred did not automatically mean she felt free to fully inhabit it. That freedom had to be fought for.

Before she was a pastor or a creative coach, Melissa was a culinary artist and hospitality executive. She brought her creative gifts into a demanding industry and lived, firsthand, the tension Liberant now addresses. Her own journey of identity and healing, learning who she was in God, confronting the wounds that had shaped how she created and why, reclaiming the right to take up space and be seen as an artist with a distinct voice, became the foundation for everything that followed.

In 2010, Melissa co-founded Epiphany Space, a community for independent artists, creative entrepreneurs, and freelancers. What she encountered there confirmed what her own story had already taught her: the creative blocks artists carried were almost never about talent. They were about wounds. Unhealed experiences. Lies believed for so long they felt like truth. And the healing that unlocked the creativity was the same healing she had walked through herself.

For more than fifteen years, Melissa has been coaching artists through blocks rooted in trauma, pastoring creatives through the tension between faith and calling, and walking people through inner healing and deliverance. The spiritual work and the creative work, she found, were never separate. When the wound heals, the work flows.

Liberant Ministries formalizes that integration, making it accessible to Christian artists and creatives everywhere. It provides Spirit-led, trauma-informed resources, coaching, and community for creatives who want to grow in both their spiritual walk and their creative life.

What We Explore

Themes & Topics

The spiritual and creative territory we journey through together.

Learning to discern and respond to God's voice is foundational to the creative life. We help artists develop a listening posture that transforms both their spiritual walk and their creative output.

Inviting God into the creative process changes everything. We explore what it means to partner with the ultimate Creator, the One who designed you as a creative being.

Your creative space is sacred ground. We address identity, spiritual warfare, and cultivating an atmosphere where the Holy Spirit is welcome to move in and through your work.

Past wounds can block creative flow and limit our ability to thrive. Through trauma-informed practices and the healing presence of Jesus, we address the root causes of creative blocks and help bring freedom in life and creativity.

From Bezalel to David, Scripture reveals people filled with the Spirit for creative work. We explore the difference between the Spirit coming upon someone for a task versus being Spirit filled as a way of life, and what that means for your calling.
